The only veterinary degree course available in New Zealand is the Bachelor of Veterinary Science conducted at Massey University, in Palmerston North. The Bachelor of Veterinary Science students elect a particular ‘track’ in their final year, and spend that year engaged in clinical practice in their area of interest. The Animal Emergency Centre and the Veterinary Specialist Group have a formal relationship with Massey University, and host all final year students with an interest in small animals (a category of veterinary medicine mainly concerned with diseases of dogs and cats). Each student comes to the hospital for two weeks, spending one week each with the Veterinary Specialist Group and the Animal Emergency Centre.
Hosting and teaching the veterinary student undoubtedly provides benefits for both the students and the tutors, and the Animal Emergency Centre is happy to be involved in the education of the veterinarians of tomorrow.
We occasionally accept overseas students, or Massey University Bachelor of Veterinary Science students tracking an alternative course. Please contact the practice manager if you are a student wanting to spend time with the Animal Emergency Centre.
